I have never been before, so I'm wondering if there is anything others would consider must see/do in that area.

Having lived in San Francisco and The East Bay Area for over twenty years, I know every square inch from Santa Cruz to Tahoe which is 3hrs from SF.

The Presidio, for a beautiful vision of Architecture.  Union Square for divine shopping, and
 the best hair colorist at Bebo's Salon.
North Beach for authentic Italian fare & Italian men.  ;)
The Marina District for dining, shopping, biking the Bay and breathtaking
views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Sausalito.

Definitely check out the AT&T baseball stadium in South Beach if you're a fan.
 Take in a gorgeous view watching a game facing the Bay, and enjoy the surrounding area for lovely dining, boutiques and sunshine. {some parts of SF tend to be overcast during this time of the year, however not usually in South Beach}

 Finally, don't rule out visiting the East Bay Area which is always sunny and warm from February to November.  Visit Lafayette &  Walnut Creek {shopping, restaurants, clubs}.
And check out the quaint and country-like natural beauty of Alamo/Danville/Blackhawk.
